:05, happening as we speak, a big sink hole on highway 87 in san jose. that's right along the southbound side of the highway near west virginia street. work crews are out there and so is ktvu tara moyarti but what's the very latest? >> workers workers will not continue work until engineers arrive. we had to move because it was simply too dangerous. you can see where they've blocked out one southbound lane of 87 on the left and then one lane of alma avenue on the right. the sink hole is about 30 feet wide. there's a big gap underneath the median. now caltrans discovered the problem tuesday. they came out. they poured some gravel. sort of a band aid fix. and last night they compressed the gravel and found it sank. you can see where the concrete is exposed now. there's a huge crack running up and down on that roadway. they shutdown some lanes on the freeway. we are close to west virginia street. just to give you an idea where we are on 87. crews are expected to be out here all morning repairing the sink hole. damage is pretty extensive. the highway seems to be moving up. right now let's check i

here you can see the sinkhole is pretty big, about 30 feet across and you can actually put your hand underneath the median there and it will come out on the other side. it is -- it has forced crews to shut down one lane of highway 87 southbound in the alma avenue on-ramp. caltrans discovered the problem tuesday, they came out, they poured some gravel and then last night they compressed that gravel and found that it sunk about a foot below the earth's surface and you can see where that concrete is exposed, all the cracks there. so they shut down some lanes on the freeway at 9:00 last night. we are close to west virginia street just to give you an idea of where we are on 87, and again one southbound lane is closed as is the alma avenue off-ramp. but the on-ramp from 280 is open and crews are expected to be out here all morning repairing the sinkhole so you definitely want to avoid this area. we would suggest using south alma avenue to -- expressway to 87 or also take monterey road as well and cut across to west capitol expressway to 87th. live in san jose, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu chann

warmer inland on the weekend but not a big jump up. temperatures i think will just recover and get back into the 80s. by the coast i still think 50s and 60s. system moved into the pacific northwest actually settled into oregon and the southern end of that has just been sweeping in low clouds. you can see how they bank up. they'll be a decrease in the low cloud deck because it's getting so cool aloft and also the inland temperatures have been plunging there's really not a lot to support it but it's still there. and every wind direction is almost out of the west or southwest. the delta breeze howling all the way to sacramento. two 60s, san jose and san jose state. but upper 50s and mid-50s. that system continues to carve itself out right out of the portland. for this time of year that's an extremely impressive system to make it that far and have this much of an impact. low overcast drizzle fog temperatures held in check cool for july no doubt about that. today, tomorrow bottom out and then a slight increase friday as we head into the weekend. still lots of 70s in areas that should be uppe
a big clean up to do. a fire broke out at daly city's skyline elementary school on christian avenue. this happened about 11:30 last night. just look at the pictures. the portable classroom went up in flames. the damage includes the building itself, everything inside, books, chairs, audio- visual equipment. took firefighters about 15 minutes to put it out. authorities don't know what started the fire but it apparently started outside of the portable building. no word of any injuries and students by the way return to school on august 17th. >>> meantime firefighters say an overnight house fire in san francisco caused about $350,000 damage. this fire started just before 2:30 this morning at a home on melrose avenue. the flames then spread to a second house. took firefighters about 20 minutes to contain that one alarm fire. no injuries have been reported. authorities think the fire started in the living room of the first house, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >>> the book written by kidnap victim jaycee dugard does not go on sale for another day but it is already

temperatures in the 80s. they're really not getting involved in this big warm up if you're headed out to santa clara, they're getting in the 90s. but we're getting a lot of fog here. it's shallow but it's moving into parts of the south bay. so fog then sun, cool to mild to nice to warm to hot. depending on where you are in proximity of that fog and coast. it's a cool pattern, inland upper 80s. 90, 95 for those warmest locations unless you're really far away from the coast and maybe a few pushing in a little bit further than that. there are signs that next week another weak little system will come in which will start another cooling trend that won't be until saturday or sunday. 50s in these temps. concord 55. same for napa, san rafael. san francisco, oakland, livermore 58. and high pressure continues, i think it's put on the brakes. i really do. what we had yesterday is taking into today. maybe some tropical clouds coming around that. again it moves into the sierra of southern california. sunny inland, warming ends by friday, maybe even saturday. we'll have to keep an eye to the south. fog some
, there'll be pockets as usual. but it starts to come back tonight, no big change. tomorrow morning looks almost like it does right now. so again the pattern looks to be in a holding pattern. 52 santa rosa. the moisture continues to come around. that is working into the four corners. cool pattern, pacific northwest. they hang out for a couple of day, then it ejects out. inland temps are struggling to get in. there'll be some gradual warming. then everything is stuck. so morning fog, but nothing compared to yesterday. lots of sunshine, mild to warm to a little bit warm. the breeze isn't going any where although it'll be less today than yesterday. some low mid-80s for some. 70s for others. creeping out there for antioch and oakley and brentwood. temperatures getting close to 90. maybe by tomorrow we'll see that or into thursday. night and morning fog takes us into the weekend. temperatures upper 80s, 60s, 70s by the beaches. >>> 5:11 is the time. pg & e is planning to close five high polluting power plants in contra costa county. now all of the plants operate by something that's usually fou
